Bruton Smith wants a second Cup date in Vegas
“Las Vegas is a special place. More people visit Las Vegas than any city in the world. ? With all of that and all the money we have spent here, maybe Las Vegas Motor Speedway has earned that other date. I think it has. ? If you owned NASCAR, I feel confident that you would award us a second date. ?
Smith emphasized that NASCAR has never awarded him a date for any of his tracks. He says all of his tracks either had Cup dates when he bought them, or he acquired them by buying other tracks.
?I?m not one to speculate,? Smith said. ?I feel like we have earned that right. Maybe they will feel sorry for us one day and give us another date. ? You may consider it wishful thinking on my part, but I just want to bring up the fact that that have never given me a date.?
NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said NASCAR likely would not expand its current schedule to grant Las Vegas a second date, but that Smith could acquire a date through its realignment process.
?We?ve got 36 points events on the schedule and two non-points events, so right now the schedule is as full as it can be. We don?t see any expansion of the schedule at this time,? Poston said.
?We announced the realignment plan several years ago, which is something that has been very successful. It says that if companies want to move dates around, they can come and talk to us about it and we will work with them anyway we can to make the right decisions for the sport. That remains in affect. If track owners have ideas or thoughts on how they can move or enhance dates, we will certainly listen to those and work with them on it.”
Smith says he has not considered moving a race from New Hampshire.
?We look at a lot of things. ? At this point, I have not considered it,” Smith said. “There are other places out there that maybe a date could come from. We look at all things. ? Who knows, a date may fall on us one day. That would be a nice surprise.?
