Bruton Smith asks NASCAR to swap fall Atlanta, California dates
Bruton Smith confirmed Friday that he has asked NASCAR to swap fall Sprint Cup dates between Atlanta Motor Speedway and Auto Club Speedway.
The proposal would entail Atlanta obtaining California?s Labor Day weekend date while California would get Atlanta?s Chase race in October.
Atlanta is owned by Smith?s Speedway Motorsports Inc. while Auto Club Speedway is owned by International Speedway Corp.
?That is exactly what we are proposing,? said Smith, chairman and CEO of SMI. ?The proposal has been made that we give California the October date in Atlanta and then the Labor Day event comes to Atlanta. Everybody will love it. ? It?s the thing to do, and the people I have talked with within the sport, within NASCAR, they all agree that is the thing to do.?
Smith said he has talked to NASCAR officials about the swap and added, ?I hope we will have an answer in the very near future.?
